Models have been smoothed to remove rough edges, and textures pack a lot more detail. Water shaders and effects have been heavily updated to make them look as realistic as possible. This love and attention extend beyond the opening. It’s an impressive opening for a remaster, and a sign to the care and effort that went into bringing BioShock back. Seaweed grows tall amongst the buildings, schools of jellyfish gather around the lights colorful starfish stick to the windows, and barnacles decorate a giant whale. The opening of BioShock was a jaw-dropping experience, and 2K Games have worked hard to recapture that magic. The moment the shutter comes down, and you’re shown Rapture for the first time, your jaw will drop all over again. The differences are immediately visible the second you step into the first Bathysphere. What is different are the visuals, which look immensely better. It has all the same level designs, enemies, weapons, Plasmids, and story beats. BioShock has returned to us remastered as part of the BioShock: The Collection, but are the visual enhancements good enough?īioShock Remastered is still BioShock at heart. We’ve left behind Unreal 2.5 and Unreal 3 for Unreal 4, and what we’ve come to expect visually from a game has changed. A lot of time has passed since then, however. Using Unreal Engine 2.5, and some elements of Unreal Engine 3, the team at Irrational Games successfully painted a picture of what it would be like to live in an underwater utopia gone wrong. At the time, BioShock was heralded as one of the best-looking games thanks to its attention to detail and distinct art style. In the meantime, please enjoy these previews detailing some of our experiences with the final product.īioShock first hit store shelves in 2007 on Xbox 360 and PC, and in 2008 on PS3.
